Yoga (meaning union) is
the practice of accessing and integrating all aspects of our true nature, body,
mind and spirit in the search for inner harmony. Children face many
distractions, overstimulation. Yoga and kids is a perfect match. A simple yoga
practice has a huge effect on children. Yoga at a young age sculpts the minds
and bodies of young people, providing tools that will improve and help children
to be balanced, creative and calm people. Yoga can significantly benefit children,
and in some aspects, possibly even more than it nourishes adults. These are
just some of these benefits:
• Yoga increases
coordination
• Yoga improves
concentration
• Yoga relieves stress
• Yoga promotes
self-expression
As children practice
yoga regularly, mastering new poses and creating a flow between your body and
your mind helps build confidence.
Yoga promotes a healthy body:
Regular yoga practice
helps promote a healthier body through postures that stretch, strengthen and
build coordination as well. Yoga for children improves flexibility and
increases blood flow, which in turn can help reduce the risk of injury during
other physical activity.
Yoga improves concentration and balance:
Part of the positive
changes that teachers have found when using yoga in classes is the improvement
they see in concentration. Balanced postures teach children that, with a
greater focus, they can increase attention naturally, even in children who
struggle with different attention challenges. The poses and games focus on
balance skills, develop an intrinsic force, evoke a meditative feeling and
promote stillness and mental silence.
Yoga teaches self-acceptance:
It gives children the
opportunity to learn something that is not competitive, it also teaches
children to accept and appreciate them as they are. Once again, with society
sending so many messages of inadequacy, yoga teaches children to love
themselves.
Stretching and lengthening:
Yoga postures stretch
the muscles and, by integrating breathing and movement, the muscles warm up and
become more flexible. They can give in when they need it and support sensitive
joints in a more functional way.
The beauty of yoga is that children can practice
it alone or with a group. It is a useful and inexpensive tool that can have a
positive impact on children.
